How a year, decade or generation can be defined.

I was at the mall the other day and ran through the book store. Not wanting to miss a good deal, I had to stop and check out the discount rack. On the discount rack there were two books I had to look at, Time Life Year in Photos 2006 and Pulitzer Prize Photographs (names are not 100 percent right but you get the point). I have noticed as we end the year out, CNN, MSNBC, AP and most other press agencies are sporting "The Year In Photos" on their web pages. Even I have a few pictures in the Newark Advocate's High School Football year end issue.

Everyone that knows me has seen my sports and news pictures in the local paper. From time to time I'll hit a fire, parade or something newsworthy. Freelancing is something I do in my spare time. As a firefighter I get the best seat on local house fires and auto accidents. But my photos don't hold a candle to some of the ones shot by other freelancers around the globe.

It only takes a split second to miss that perfect shot, the prize winner. Throughout history photographs have been used to inspire, disgust, enlighten, discourage and stir up extreme emotion in the viewer. No story or motion picture can tell a story like a still photograph. Every war, every major event,r good or bad, has been fozen in time by a photographer.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, some many more than that. The next time you see a picture in the news remember you are looking at what could define our generation. From the war in Iraq to the AIDS epidemic in Africa, these images will make their way to your door step, best viewed in a bathrobe with a cup of coffee.
