This is a comment on the below post by Firefighter, meant to fan the flames and cause all sorts of trouble.
I'll take the statistics at face value and believe that 6.5 million abortions have occurred since the start of the Iraq War. I'll note, however, that the source of the statistic is a 26-year-old Christian woman from Texas with 6 (plus one on the way) kids.
Personally, I would not have or encourage anyone to have an abortion. That said, I do not object to anyone else having an abortion. It's your decision. You have to make it, you have to live with it, I don't want to hear about it.
There are all sorts of laws, starting with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Amendments to the Constitution that guarantee your privacy. In U.S. law, abortion is protected under these rights. There is also a rather lengthy legal tradition of separating church and state.
Abortion is a moral issue. It is an issue of the church. People who object to abortion almost always claim that abortion violates some rule of God. Well that's God's rule, not the law of the United States. If you want to live in a country where God's law is the rule of the land, go live in Iran. Their entire legal system is based on God's law.
Oh, but that's not my God, you say? Well the God that makes someone else's personal business yours is not my God either. So leave your God out of this.
But it's murder! Murder is the unlawful killing of a human person with malice aforethought. A fetus, the thing that's usually aborted, is not a human person and is different from an unborn child. A fetus, if spontaneously ejected from the womb, would not live on its own. It's essentially a parasite, a group of cells with no brain and no ability to have any thought of a self, God, whatever.
Later during pregnancy, the fetus becomes an "unborn child" where it can live on its own outside the womb, around seven months into pregnancy. Nearly everywhere in the world where abortion is legal, the abortion of an "unborn child" is illegal.
One other thing I'd like to point out that I think is interesting... Statistics have shown that the considerable drop in crime that occurred some time back in the U.S. started about 15-16 years after abortion was made legal. It is theorized that the women who usually have abortions are the women whose children grow up to lead a life of crime, i.e. poor, uneducated, too young, etc. (Read the book "Freakonomics" by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner as well the numerous studies on the topic.)
So if abortion was illegal, you would have a whole different, more real, problem on your hands. Then you'd be crying for liberals to bail you out by supporting the poor.
