The trip down the towpath was really different than my normal vacation. Normally I take the family to the beach, Old Orchard Beach Maine, Sandbridge Beach Virgina or The Outer Banks of North Carolina. This time it was just myself and three friends. It was nice to get away for a few days and break free of the normal daily rat race and slow down to bicycle speed. I would never attempt to take the family the whole 184 miles but would consider camping with them and doing a short ride. There is plenty of stuff to do at the pay camp sites for days of family fun.
For a challenge, do the 184 miles. I gather from talking to some of the locals, it's not too common to see riders go all the way. I did get a little fuzzy feeling inside when reaching mile 0. The experience of finishing all 184 miles is great. It is hard to imagine canal boats being towed up and down the canal. Most places are overgrown and have been recaptured by trees and weeds. But it still leaves a lot to see.
Train, condition, pack well and prepare for the weather and you will have a great time.
