I'm getting back on the bike again! I don't have the new bike yet so I'm still working with the old one. I put in a measly 4 miles today and 5 miles Saturday (with the family) but I found a website that lets you map out your rides online.
It's called MapMyRide.com and it lets you pick out the roads you want to ride, tells you how many miles the route is and even gives you the elevation.
I learned that the street I go up and down to get to and from my house is at a more than 6 percent grade for a mile!
The only thing I don't think you can do is see bike trails, like the C&O, because it's not on a road map. It uses the map from Google Maps. [Correction: You can follow the trail, you just have to unclick the "Follow Roads" button and find the trail with the Satellite view!)
It's a neat tool. You can even keep track of your rides so you can log miles and see how many calories you burn and how much gas you save. Depending on how much time I have tomorrow, I may go for a 10-mile ride over to Lowe's.
