Every student break, Bowling Green State University (BGSU) hosts a fire school. Bowling Green State Fire School provides the perfect opportunity to train whole teams and teach individuals new knowledge and skills to take back to their departments. You can receive hands-on field training from 150 plus experienced instructors in over 40 specialized classes including online and credit courses. Scholarships are available for May Fire School from the Nationwide Foundation and the Zimmerman-Markley Community Service Award.
My partner Tom and I were awarded a scholarship by the Nationwide Foundation. Tom took an Advanced Auto Extrication course and I signed up for Advanced Fire Investigation. We spent the week at a Best Western, no pool but it did have a hot tub full of firefighters.
The town of Bowling Green was dead, all the students were out for the summer. The campus was nice. A local Pub called Ziggy's hosted a free pizza and wing night paid for by Sutphen Corp. a fire truck dealer.
We were only there for a week but I couldn't wait to get out of there. I have found that Bowling Green really isn't the place for me. As soon as it started it was over, now I am back home where I should be. A little wiser yes, but not any smarter.
