Heath Care!

OK, my fellow blog partner has got me looking into this health care issue. I'll admit up front that I am in favor of health care reform. I think the whole system is messed up and needs overhauled. I also think that everyone should have access to health care. It is sad that the most powerful country in the world has so many people without access to health care.

So at first, every time Firefighter would bring up the issue, I would counter his negative remarks about Obama's plan and name all of the reasons why the Obama plan is good for the country.

After researching it a little, however, I have changed my tune a little.

I still think everyone should have health insurance and that the current cost of health care is way too high. So the current system needs overhauled.

I stumbled across this article in my research and I like what it says.

The article notes that we need to take health insurance out of hands of our employers and let us buy it on our own. We do it with care insurance, right?

One thing the article says that I disagree with is that the government shouldn't set minimum plan standards. Why not? Looking at car insurance again, every state has minimum standards. You don't have the freedom to pick coverage lower than the state requirement.

Like in the article, I also disagree with the Obama plan on deductible. Obama sets a low maximum deductible. Why not make it like other insurance and you pick your own deductible (within a reasonable range)?

Another thing I agree with the article on and not with Obama is the costs for unhealthy people. Obama says healthy people should pay the same as people with unhealthy lifestyles. Again, back to car insurance, if I'm a safe driver, I can get a discount on my insurance. Why not do the same with health insurance? If I'm a non-smoker, shouldn't I get a discount?

Overall though, this is a good article. It helps sort out the issues with the Obama plan.

  1. Very good article, I agree with the better health and smoking issues. Being an exsmoker it sure would detour people from starting. Preexisting conditions and child hood health issues I disagree with. I have a buddy who's daughter had a stroke at birth, it really isn't fair for them to pay higher for her but life isn't fair I guess. Now getting a fine for not insuring yourself, there goes that freedom thing again. There are people self employed that are barely making ends meet. that is wrong to tell them how to spend their money. I'll do some more reading, glad to see you at least thought about it.
