Getting Back

Assume for a moment that we make it all the way to Washington D.C. on the C&O Canal Tow Path. How do we get back to Cumberland?

I suppose if we had the time we could ride back but all of us have other lives to get back to. The options then, are few. First there's the shuttle service, set up by a couple of companies that specialize in bike trips like this. But this is expensive! Freedom Trail Riders, for example, charges $130 one-way for the first person and $65 for each additional.

You could take an Amtrak train from D.C. to Cumberland, or vice versa, but because Cumberland is an "unmanned" station, you can't bring checked luggage (i.e. your bike).

So I chose to rent a U-Haul truck. I made the reservation last night. It's $140 for a one-way rental. We'll get to D.C., pick up the truck, throw the bikes in the back and drive back to Cumberland.

The only hitch is finding places to seat three or four people. I assume the truck can hold up to three in the front cab. That means someone is going to have to ride in the back. And I guess that could be illegal. I've seen people do it though. Anyone know for sure?

  1. Lets assume M3 fails to make it to the end of the trail, lets say he poops out from not eating enough beans. Falling 35 miles short of the finish line, Randy and I continue to mile after mile to DC. The question is,,,,,,,what do we eat for lunch? Burger King or Steak!

  2. You are so funny firefighter... Did you rent a box truck or a pickup? I know Ohio law states a pickup has to have a cap on the back in order for someone to sit back there and they all have to be over 16 a small box truck though they could sit back there because it is enclosed and they can't fall out and you can pay the extra $5 or $10 to get the furniture padding so they can sit on it instead of the hard floor, they are usually in all of the box trucks you just cut the cord and pay the extra at the end of your journey.
Make sure to lock firefighter back there while the rest of you enjoy the steak dinner lol.

  3. Yes, it is a box truck. And Firefighter is quickly becoming the prime candidate to be locked in the back.

  6. Just think about it firefighter, You can stretch out and lay down even go to sleep as long as the driver can actually drive lol, and you will have all your gear from staying over night right there so you should be more comfy than those in the front instead of crammed into the front where you can't stretch your legs at all. and you won't have the sun beating down in the windows on you.. But be sure to stop and check on the person in the back if you are facing major heat!
