Gay Marriage For All!

Dear Abby has finally come out and said she's for gay marriage. This, apparently, after years of suspicion that she did in fact support gay or same sex marriages but never admitted it flatly. Her argument was that if two people want to make that highest form of commitment together, "God bless 'em."

I agree with Abby. Marriage is no longer just a religious contract but a binding legal contract that influences a number of life issues such as insurance, legal contracts, property ownership, taxes, etc.

I am not going to debate whether or not homosexuality is right or wrong or against God and the Bible. These things are not relevant.

If two people want to make a commitment to each other, they should be able to do so and be recognized by the legal system related to the above listed life issues. In all of these cases, gender makes no difference so why should it matter whether the two legally bound people are of the same sex or not?

I once heard someone argue against same sex partnerships. The argument was in a discussion about health insurance where the head-of-household member of a same-sex couple was trying to get her dependent partner covered on her insurance. The person arguing against this said this was not right because a gay person could change partners every month and each time get the new partner covered on their health insurance. This would be a means of cheating the system. Therefor, homosexuals should not be allowed to have insurance for their partners.

This is exactly why we need to legalize same-sex marriages. A same-sex couple should be permitted to be fully and legally bound in marriage. While this allows them to show their commitment and all of that, it also allows them to legally operate in our legal system which allows certain benefits (and detriments) to legally married couples.
