Reconsidering MySpace

Earlier I composed a blog entry trashing MySpace. A few months ago I created a profile there and had a bad experience. I was flooded with spam and it didn't seem like anyone was there other than spammers.

Recently I happened back to MySpace because a friend passed his page on to me. I started browsing again and found a couple old friends and some casual acquaintances and thus decided to create a new profile.

So I'm back on MySpace and this time it doesn't seem as bad. I found the spam blocking settings and I haven't had any issues yet. I'm finding all sorts of people and I had fun creating my own profile.

It still does amaze me, however, that it is so popular. It seems that a whole lot of people like to post a whole lot of information about themselves on the Internet. I think it's sort of like a semi-anonymous way of being an exhibitionist.

At the same time, it is very fun to snoop through profiles and see what people write, allowing your voyeuristic side out. It's especially fun when you find someone you know of but don't quite know. It's like peeking out the windows at the neighbors.

The same could be said for blogging. As a friend of mine put it, it's like talking to yourself. Especially this blog! But it is very therapeutic I suppose.
