"To me, it's scary to think I live in the world with people who believe this way. To think only your belief in God is what keeps you from being a bad person? You have no human decency? You have no compassion? You only have your belief in a man in the sky to keep you from doing wrong? That's scary to the rest of us who live on secular humanism and empathy, based in something much stronger and much more sound."
Now this sure sounds like a conversation I had with my fellow blog contributor M3. Without God I say this world would be a horrible place. Human decency and compassion would be words taught by history teachers. There would be no need to succeed or do anything to better mankind. What would be the point? If all your life was was 55 to 85 years of hard labor, why live? You could instead live a lustful life of sex, money and everything else bad.
In nature, the weak are weeded out of the population. We as humans shelter and protect the weak. Wouldn't we be better off without them? Nature survives without human interaction so the laws of nature must be correct right? So therefore we should kill off all the retards and people who don't contribute to society. People like WELFARE recipients, unemployed, retards, crazy people, prison inmates and all other dysfunctional people.
That's what nature does! Throw them welfare bums out on the streets and tell them work or starve! That's what nature would do right!
What you would create would be a blood bath, people would be killing each other in the streets.
So without God, there is no point to be decent.
And yes, I do believe I would drastically change the way I live if there were no God. With God life means nothing. There just wouldn't be much of a point to working a bad job, slaving in the heat and being nice to people I hate or helping a person out when I could be at home blogging or doing drugs.
There's an excellent discussion going on over on Et Tu on all of these issues.
