Legion Etrangere

For those of you considering a career change...

The French Foreign Legion may bring memories of an older time but they are still just as active today as they ever were.

The Legion is a military unit in France that will accept volunteers from any country in the world.

Even today the unit is deployed in the current hotspots, Afghanistan, Iraq.

The unit is still part of the French military and members serve under the French tricolour.

But why would someone want to leave their own country and enlist in the military of another country? Who knows why. Everyone has their reason I'm sure.

But for one, the Legion allows members to enlist under a pseudonym in order to conceal their true identity. So of course you get some people who are running from things in their own country.

Most of the recruits for the Legion come from Europe. Over time, more Germans have joined than any other nationality. But even a number of Americans have joined.

I find it fascinating and I suppose if were one the run for any reason, I would head to France and look into the Legion.

I'll leave you with a news story about the Legion.
